The Carolina coast gets its share of afternoon storms, especially in summer — they usually blow through fast. But when a whole day turns gray, it helps to have a plan. Here's our rainy-day playbook, all within a short drive of Wait and Sea.

Alligator Adventure

At Barefoot Landing, this 15-acre reptile park is mostly walkable under cover and endlessly fascinating for kids — hundreds of alligators plus hundreds of other animals. It's the first thing we pull out of the bag on a wet day.

Catch a show

The Alabama Theatre's variety show is a Grand Strand institution, and the House of Blues has music most nights. A matinee or an early show turns a washout afternoon into a highlight.

Shop the Landing

Barefoot Landing's 100-plus shops mean you can wander, snack and browse for hours without getting rained on much. Even the walk between stores, along the covered boardwalks over the lake, is part of the fun.

Or just stay in

Honestly? A rainy beach day at the house isn't the worst thing. Smart TVs for a movie, the big kitchen island for a baking project, a puzzle on the table, rain on the porch roof. Sometimes the storm gives you the down day you didn't know you needed.

And when it clears — it usually does — the beach is three blocks away, freshly rinsed.
